Parenting

You may need help with parenting if you:

  • Experience elevated stress and/or feeling of guilt related to parenting
  • Have frequent arguments with your partner on how to parent
  • Noticed a decrease in positive interactions with your child
  • Cannot get them to follow simple rules
  • Struggle with your child’s out-of-control emotions and behaviors
  • Are not sure how to deal with their misbehavior
  • Struggle with finding any enjoyment in raising your child

If any of those statements are true for you, I may be able to help.

My clients

I work with parents and caregivers of children ages 0-16 who experience parenting difficulties in their everyday lives.

How does parenting counseling work?

There are 4 parts to parenting counseling:

Assessment

Since we want to make sure that we have the best understanding of your parenting strengths and difficulties, we will start with a thorough assessment:

Session 1
A session with both parents/ caregivers (if applicable) to understand more about your family, your child’s behavior, and your parenting approach.

• Before session 2 I will ask you to complete assessment questionaries.

Session 2
Observation of parents’/caregivers’ interaction with their child, if possible.

Goal setting

After sharing assessment findings with you and coming up with parenting counseling goals that we will concentrate on our treatment. We will decide together on the frequency and duration of our sessions.

Reaching the goals

Depending on your family’s needs we may be addressing, some or all of the following topics:

Children:

  • Develop your child’s emotional coping skills
  • Encourage behavior you like
  • Teach new skills and support learning
  • Manage misbehavior
  • Deal with disobedience
  • Plan ahead to prevent problems
  • Raise confident, capable kids

Teens:

  • Support your teenager and create more positive interactions
  • Negotiate boundaries and expectations
  • Encourage behavior you like
  • Deal calmly with conflict
  • Prepare for risky situations
  • Raise confident, capable teenagers

Planning for the future

In the final part of parenting counseling, we will plan for the future to better prepare you for dealing with challenging situations.
